Making blunt demands, or giving feedback like thats wrong is likely to turn off your audience, male or female. This is where stellar communication skills come in handy. Use a tone thats non-confrontational, so that the other person isnt automatically feeling defensive and ready to mutiny. And even when you disagree, try to find some common element that you can use as an olive branch before explaining what you want to do differently I see what youre saying, and although I do agree that we need to raise revenue, I see it a little differently.One strategy is to ask questions instead of diving in with statements. That way, you can be part of starting a dialogue instead of something that can be perceived as an attack. Asking clarification questions like where do you see this going? or how does this impact our goals? opens up a communication line with the other speaker, and will give you an opportunity to say what you want to express as part of the back-and-forth.4. Dont be afraid to speak up.When I was younger, I was told things like never disagree with your boss in public. And now that Ive been around longer, I think thats trueto an extent. Id modify it to, if you disagree, do it respectfullyand pick your moments. One of the biggest challenges facing many professional women (especially younger ones) is the idea that they should hang back and let more senior people hash things out. And while I dont recommend inserting yourself into every single debate in every single meeting just for the sake of being heard, remember that youre in the room for a reason. If you disagree with something being discussed, dont be afraid to say sobut again, always phrase it as respectfully and diplomatically as possible.And again, pick your moment. If your boss is giving a presentation in front of bigwigs, and you see that shes wrong about something, dont throw her under the bus in front of everyone, or give a loud and long dissent in the meeting. If youre directly asked about your opinion, give it carefully. Or talk about it offline with your boss later. Your opinion is valuable, and your insights can earn you respect and acknowledgment if theyre expressed well.5. Dont let people talk over you.Weve all been there youre talking about something work-related, and a colleague (often older and male) breaks in and, in a dismissive tone, gives an opinion about why youre wrong, without letting you finish the thought. Unless youve been filibustering the floor with a long mono logue, this is poor form on the interruptors part. And no one likes this kind of bullying tactic. So how do you handle in the moment? Politely interrupt them back, and ask to finish your point, or try to turn it into a dialogue instead of a lecture.6. Advocate for yourself.This is, hands-down, one of the best things you can do to get respect at work. Knowing what you want, and how to ask for it, is a skill that will serve every professional (male or female) well throughout a career. Being able to negotiate is a key leadership skill, and one every woman should have at the ready as a professional. Know when to fold em.If youre in a work situation where you try all these strategies and youre still not getting the level of professional respect you deserve, then it could very well be time to walk away. Youre not obligated to stay in a role where you are defined and treated according to stale old perceptions about what women are and should be, so if you find that youre spending more time counteracting stereotypes than actually doing your job, it could be time to get out. To get the kind of precision and reliability you want under the wings of todays flying machine, youll need about two years of manufacturing time, never mind the half a decade or so of designing and research that proceeds it.But now Xinhua Wu, a prof of materials engineering and the director of Monash Universitys Centre for Additive Manufacturing in Melbourne, Australia, has proved to the world that a jet engine can be made on a 3D printer.Wu had already printed a variety of components for a variety of aerospace companies, and, in zu sich view, Its not much more difficult to make the whole engine, once you know how to deal with the materials. To do just that she applied for a grant from the Australian government.Wu had previously made 3D printed parts for GE, Boeing, and other compani es, and she had learned that such cutting-edge products were not ones she could use to flaunt the capabilities of new additive technology. So, with those funds, she set out to rebuild a 40-year-old engine. Provided by Microturbo, its one that can still be found on the Dassault Falcon 20. They also determined the material of each component to reproduce it with precision. They worked to optimize the printing process to be as fast as possible, and to use as little supporting material as possible. One particular challenge were the 100-micron holesnot a trivial size in the world of 3D printing.After a year of work, they printed two comple te engines. Now, should anyone want another, they can print it in a matter of monthsyears less than it would have taken to build in the past.In theory, the engine is ready to be fired up and even power a plane. There is nothing stopping anyone from doing it, says Wu. The only thing is we signed an agreement beforehand. Were not allowed to do that. Nor are they allowed to run off a few spare parts. The same agreement dictates that Wu and her team cut the weight of certain components before firing it up. A direct duplication of the current engine is straightforward, she says. But we are going to change the design, and that becomes challenging. That will be the next step.But thats not the only next step. Already, several engine manufacturers have approached Wu about building a newer engine. Duplicating the materials used in the older engine was a self-imposed constraint unique for the project. But those materials were better suited to casting and forging. Now Boeing has asked Wu to des ign a material and process more appropriate for 3D printing. And machining companies have come to her hoping shell pass down her knowledge.However, much of Wus work is likely to change how things might be printed in the future. Worst of all, you dont know why you didnt get it - you either didnt hear back at all, or received feedback so vague that its virtually useless (e.g. We decided to go with another candidate who was a better fit.) Is there anything worse?Its incredibly frustrating when a recruiter or hiring manager doesnt share a concrete reason why you were reisepassed over, but if it happens to you, dont worry. Often, theres still a way to figure out what went wrong - heres how.If you have the contact info of the hiring manager, its best to chat with them rather than a recruiter or HR representative, says Ren Burgett, career coach and owner of 3R Coach .An HR manager or recruiter is mora likely to give you a pr ogrammed HR response such as, We found a candidate that was a better fit for our needs. The hiring manager is more likely to give you a candid response, she explains.If you havent already been in touch with the hiring manager , though, you may want to reach out to someone who can point them in your direction.If you dont have their contact details, you need to get in touch with whoever your point of contact was throughout the recruitment process.
